I just wanted to drop you a quick email to thank you for the fantastic time the boys and I had fishing with you last Wednesday. I very much appreciate your patience in dealing with their sometimes-too-short attention span, and you did a wonderful job of keeping us all very engaged in catching fish and enjoying the beautiful views of the bay and mangroves. I also really want to thank you for giving the boys a chance to reel in a tarpon from around the dock area, I know that it's probably not a particularly exciting fishing experience for you, but they haven't stopped talking about it since - it meant a lot to them.

We visit Puerto Rico every two years, and will most certainly be looking forward to going out fishing with you again the next time we're in town. The boys will be a bit older by then, and perhaps we can add a couple more hours to the trip. I know that I would certainly be excited about the chance to fight another tarpon or two myself, and somewhere out there is a big barracuda that we need to track down...

Well guys. Today was awesome. The group from Amsterdam hade 3 lady fish, 1 snook, 1 jack, and jump more them 15 tarpon and release 4 nice fish.The bigger fish was about 45 pounds and the others between 25 to 30 pounds.

He has had numerous news articles and photos published in Maine, where he attended College of the Atlantic as an undergraduate student. In 2010 he received a Kathryn Davis Advanced International Studies travel grant to edit and report ne...ws in Istanbul, Turkey. He has been awarded for his reporting on education by the Maine Press Association. Blake hopes to use his experience writing and photographing to document fly fishing in urban centers around the globe.

This summer, College of the Atlantic grad Blake Davis, 22, sets off for a year-long fly-fishing world tour courtesy of a $25,000 Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowship. The only requirements of the 60 coveted annual grants for independent study are that you leave the U.S., travel solo, and drop a progress report in the mail at least four times a year to prove that you’re alive and on topic. We asked correspondent Christian DeBenedetti, who received his own Watson Fellowship in 1996 to study the beers and brewing techniques of the world, to catch up with Davis and find out who indeed had scored the better project.
I would love to catch a tarpon. I’ve made thousands of tarpon flies, but I’ve never even seen one. I’m going to go for it in Puerto Rico with Capt.Pochy Tarpon Hombre.

Made it down to Puerto Rico for a trip with some college buddies last weekend. Pretty fun place to party, semi expensive, but good food and scenery, and even better for fishing!!!!!

Went out with an awesome guide off the south west coast.

My guide fee splitting partner wasn't quite up to fly casting all day, but the guide had a good plan for that... live lining off the back, fly fishing off the front. Fished just offshore, on the beach, under marinas, lagoons and wayyyyy back in the mangroves.

Ended up with a handful of tarpon two the boat on fly (missed several), missed a few beasts on live bait. This was my third best one on fly, lost the other two right at the boat:

Caught a few nice ladyfish on both fly and live, man they fight hard!
Also got us a nice snook:
Weather was a BIG issue on the trip which limited the photos.

To cap it off, had an amazing local lobster deal I found by pure luck. Had these puppies all weekend:The scenery was the best part:

Tarpon Adventure

I've tried to catch a Tarpon (Sabalo) for over five years and in just one day Capt. Franciso "Pochy" Rosario helped me land five (10lbs, 30lbs, 40lbs, 50lbs and 80lbs); one for each year. He's knowledge and experience put me on the fish quickly, giving me nonstop action all day. Also caught a few Jack Crevalle (Jurel) and Capt Pochy took me to his secret spot to catch a Snook (Robalo in Spanish) to complete my Gran Slam (catching three species of sport fish in one day). He did all he could do to make it happen, but it wasn't in the cards. I can't wait to return and fish with Capt Pochy again. He made it an experience of a life time.

Tarpon Action up day Tuesday 5 of July we fish with Mr.Chris Schupler on fly we hook up 18 Tarpon the smallest was about 20 pounds and the largest as 90 pounds release 12 also up hook four Jack Crevalle the bigger was 20 pounds all release .Today we fish with Mr.Jamie Harley hook up and release 10 Tarpon the bigger was 140 pounds and hook up two Cubera Snapper and two Mutton Snapper between 2 to 10 pounds all on bait.

Thanks again for your support and incredible sampling efforts for the tarpon DNA research study at the FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and Mote Marine Laboratory. We can’t wait to get the recapture information from 2010, as the total number of submitted DNA samples broke 3,000. We hope to see some new movement patterns or longer times at large between recaptured tarpon, but we have a lot of work to do between now and then with DNA extractions and sequencing. This should be completed by April. At that time, we will put out a press release in hopes that some of the media will take the ball and run with it!

We had some glitches with our computers and back up files this fall in addition to a vacant position in the genetics lab from late July until Dec., so angler names and sample totals will be mailed as a supplement to our newsletter some time in Feb.   We anticipate the newsletter (paper this year) will be mailed at the end of the month. The even better news is we are caught up “enough” with data entry to do the supplemental mailing, announce our winners, do the raffle, and our new person has been hired and will be full time tarpon genetics!!!!! What a great start to the new year. Finally, be prepared as people from Mote Marine Lab will be contacting you by phone within the next week or so for shirt sizes.

Way to go, team ~ yes, you are part of the tarpon team.   This project is 100% dependent on people like you and we are most grateful for your help. May you be just as productive (or more) and tarpon plentiful in 2011.

What Is The Tarpon?

Out of all the fish in the seas, in North America and the waters around the world, the tarpon just may be the most exciting. Tarpon is actually the common name for these fish which are known by the scientific short hand of Megalops because they belong to the Megalops genus in the Megalopidae family of fish. There are 2 primary types of these fish, one is native to the Atlantic Ocean (the Megalops atlanticus) and the other (Megalops cyprinoides) the oceans of the Indo Pacific region around Australia.
The Atlantic version of the tarpon is found along the coast of North America as far north as the state of Virginia and as far south as the coastal waters off the South American country of Brazil. They are dense in the waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. In the eastern Atlantic waters they are found around the African coastal nations of Angola and Senegal. The Indo Pacific tarpon can be found around the east coast of Africa, around Southeast Asia, Tahiti, Japan and, of course, Australia. Tarpon usually reside in saltwater, but they are sometimes found in rivers that lead into saltwater marshes. Brackish waters with low amounts of dissolved oxygen can be suitable for tarpon because they have a swim bladder that they can use to breathe, which helps them survive in water that has low salt content.
Tarpon habitat varies during their life span. In the 1st stage, as larva, they are found in the clear open waters of the ocean where the temperature is warm and they can remain close to the surface. Then they will work their way to salt marshes, pools, rivers, creeks and other warm, shallow places that have a sandy or muddy bottom. They will swim up a river for a while as they grow, and then head back for the open water of the sea as they get bigger. Some will remain in freshwater their entire lives.
This is a very large species of fish, and you will need to employ specific tarpon fishing techniques when fighting them because they can be up to 8 feet long, weigh well over 100 lbs, and jump often when hooked. They are easy to recognize by their lateral lines along the side and silver colored scales. The back is a blue or green color, generally and they have very large eyes, and a large upturned mouth.
They will tend to breed off shore in warmer areas and females are extremely prolific, able to lay over 10 million eggs. They are able to breed once they reach a certain size, generally around 100 centimeters and they spawn during the early summer season. If the larva can survive for a little more than 2 months, they will generally be able to make it to maturity, but it is always tough for any young fish to make it in the wild. Other fish are their main predators, but other tarpon of larger size will eat them as will birds that feed on fish. Even grown tarpon can fall victim to a bull shark or hammerhead. Even once they are grown, the fact that they must approach the surface of the water in order to breathe puts them in a vulnerable spot for sea birds eager for a meal. Things can be rough for tarpon, but they eat their share as babies, as well, including: crabs, bugs, grass shrimp and tiny fish. Once grown, they will eat in mid water where they hunt during darkness, generally. Tarpon, like a lot of larger fish species, swallow their prey whole.
Both species of these fish are considered some of the very finest game fish in the world. They will fight like few other fish, leaping high into the air before crashing back to the water. That they can do this even though they reach the size of a small human being is even more impressive. A lot of tournaments focus on tarpon all around the world, but it is important to remember that since they are a bony fish that does not have good tasting meat, they are usually a catch and release fish.
These are the general facts about tarpon as a whole, but let's take a look at what fishing for them is like.

What Is Tarpon Fishing Like?

These strong, high flying fish are some of the most sought after, but if you are out you may want to use the services of tarpon fishing guides because there are various laws that govern these impressive game fish that are an important part of their native area's economies. Be sure to always check the local regulations because as much fun as these easy to find fish can be, you don't want to end up breaking in laws while in pursuit of them. This includes always checking the open tarpon fishing season for the area you plan to fish.
Another great tip is to get a tarpon fishing report before heading out. It is one of the things that can help you make sure you don't waste massive time searching for tarpon. You can fish for this species with a variety of methods ranging from bait fishing to fly fishing.
Flats fishing is one way to go, especially if you use a fly rod. Many anglers prefer this tarpon fishing technique because it allows the angler to feel a lot closer to a hunter than fishing generally allows. It is far more about stalking and targeting the fish than simply covering a lot of water and hoping to stumble upon a fish. A suitable fly rod outfit for tarpon would be a 10 or 12 weight rod and reel, very strong line and a leader tippet that is around 12 to 20 pounds.
When fly fishing the flats, a boat for shallow water will be used will be used - generally, this is called a flats skiff. The tarpon fishing guide will be on the lookout for the fish and the angler will be at the bow of the boat waiting for incoming fish. Three or four feet of ocean water is generally preferred and looking for a school is the idea. The guide's job is to position the angler in such a way that the fish are intercepted. The angler will need to be very quick to cast correctly to present the fly to the fish.

Yesterday we went fishing in Kayak to Caño Tiburones Arecibo. El Caño is the biggest system of marshes and flooded area in Puerto Rico.At about 8.00am we meet the guys on the starting site Mr. Craig, Mr.Umpierre,Mr. Orli and Capt.Pochy and prepared to a great fishing adventure one of a kind for the diversity of life and natural scenery of the place.

That's right, the mystery surrounding the location of the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Search has ended, with the international announcement that Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea will be the host country for the globally-mobile ASP World Tour event this October 30 to November 10.

For five years, the Search has brought a unique dynamic to the World Tour, with successful showings in Reunion, Mexico, Chile, Bali and Portugal. This year, the Carribean in late October will throw out exactly the sort of exciting curveball the event is known for.

"It's going to be interesting," said France's World Tour competitor Jeremy Flores. "I think the Rip Curl Pro Search is our most amazing event and every year we go to a special location and it's always exciting. I have never been to Puerto Rico, but I have a bunch of friends there and I know they've got good waves, so I'm looking forward to it."

One surfer who has experienced the waves of Puerto Rico is 38-year-old World Tour veteran Taylor Knox. "It's a great place to have the Search event, because we're going to have plenty of options and waves to choose from," said Taylor Knox, who finished runner-up at the 2006 Rip Curl Pro Search. "Rip Curl has been really good at picking places that have more than one wave option and I think it's great to do something new by heading to the Caribbean."

"Having an event in Puerto Rico is almost a draw to keep me on Tour all year, because I couldn't imagine having an event in my backyard and not being able to be there," added Kelly Slater. The nine-time ASP World Champion hails from nearby Cocoa Beach, in Florida, and knows the Caribbean waves well. "I have a lot of great memories of Puerto Rico - all the first wins I had internationally as a kid were there and I surfed a lot of contests there when I was younger. I'm looking forward to getting there."

Puerto Rico will be one of two new locations on the 2010 ASP Women's World Tour, with Taranaki, New Zealand being the other. The world's Top 17 female surfers are obviously chuffed to explore somewhere new this season.

"The Caribbean has always been a dream holiday destination for me and now it's clear they've got incredible waves there," said Australia's Steph Gilmore, reigning three-time word champion. Hi my name is David Mark and I’m addicted…to Tarpon Fishing and we discover Fly Fishing paradise In the west coast of Puerto Rico.

How to get there I took the short flight from Florida to Puerto Rico (Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla ) The airport is the second inte...rnational airport in Puerto Rico in the region of Porta del Sol, Puerto Rico's west coast picked up a rental car and drove 1 hours to Boqueron area. Capt.Pochy is the pioneer developer of Boqueron Bay Inshore Tarpon fishery and the only fly fishing guides in this region.They live to fish and spend all their time on the water or tying flies. Capt.Pochy knowledgeable, and dedicated to finding fish. The area is home to a significant population of year-round resident tarpon. Plenty of larger fish also the regions bays, lagoon and estuaries throughout the year. The big Tarpon are present, presumably to take advantage of the warmer waters and plentiful forage.

In my time with Capt.Pochy we saw hardly any other anglers amongst an immense amount of great water. We found tarpon rolling in the mangroves and snook crashing baitfish. We also had some great sight fishing for blue runners over hard flats.

The Boqueron Bay Tarpon trip for anglers interested in two to five days of serious Tarpon fishing. For anglers simple hotel based accommodations, uncrowded waters, straightforward travel logistics, and skilled motivated guides, this is the trip!
I was met by Capt.Francisco (pochy) Rosario, my guide for the next few days our of Boqueron bay Cabo Rojo. On this portion my trip I was joined by my fishing friend, Buck. Once Pochy loaded our equipment into his truck he poured us cold Piña Coladas which we enjoyed on the short drive to the boat. This was Buck’s first tarpon trip ever and he managed to hook /jump three fish and land one in his first day of fishing. One encounter that neither of us will ever forget started with a perfect lead and a super visual/violent take less than 30 feet from the boat!

I have to say Buck is one of the luckiest fly fishermen I have ever met. It seemed that every time he had a rod in his hand the fish would come to our boat. One time he just stood up and said, “ There’s one” in his charming southern accent , plopped his fly out, stripped and wiggled his fly twice and the fish ate it. Buck actually is an accomplished angler and though he made it look easy at times, we had our struggles.

Two of the days I was in high heaven with wads of fish rolling and daisy chaining all around me. Though my ability to consistently feed these fish was limited, I did manage to feed a few and fought my personal best on my last cast of the trip. I even missed my flight home due to fighting this beautiful beast. Tarpon took me on and off a flat, through a deep blue water , and ultimately broke my leader off .

Tarpon fishing in the Boqueron Bay on fly is for everyone. You must be ready to hunt fish, face light winds . The stronger the caster, the better your chances are. Leading a moving fish with a 15 mph crosswind or hitting a laid up tarpon on the nose is anything but easy! I recommend allotting at least four days to such a trip taking into account that longer stays increase your chance to more Tarpon. Most of the boat runs are from 15 minutes to about an 1/2 hour. Each day I saw hundreds of Tarpon, jumped between five and twelve from 25 to 75 pounds, and ultimately landed between one and five fish every day of the trip.
I was very impressed with the entire experience. With innumerable opportunities to sight cast with 10-weight rods to tarpon in the 30 to 150 pound class. Captain Pochy,

Thank you for two of the best fishing days in my life! 24 tarpon, on flies, in one day! My brother Frank and I had an absolutely wonderful experience with you. The day before we caught the two dozen tarpon, we caught 10 with you and I simply didn't believe we could do any better. We caught them sight fishing in crystal clear water "4-6 ft.", in deeper water "20-30 ft." and in the shallows "2-3 ft.". We caught tarpon around boat slips, in the middle of bays, along sandy beaches and along rocky breakers. You certainly know your spots and how "and when" to pick them.
I do have to tell you that when we first went out on that second day and anchored in the middle entrance of a two mile wide bay, first thing in the morning, and you said the tarpon like to come here on Sundays, I thought to myself, well, at least yesterday was good fishing - today, I guess we'll be mostly practicing our casting. Fortunately, I couldn't have been more wrong. You know where the fish are and we certainly got into them there for several hours of steady action. I guess the best story of the day was my catching six tarpon on three casts - I would hook one, it would throw the fly somewhere in the middle of the fight, another tarpon would pick it up and we'd bring it to the boat. I've never seen anything like it. Talk about exciting action! And the fish - "huge" doesn't begin to describe them. I saw one rolling that had a back that looked like a decent sized dolphin. Most of the ones we caught were in the 30-50 lb. range, and man-o-man, these were tough, flying fish to hang on to.
I've fly-fished for and caught all 5 types of Pacific salmon and they didn't hold a candle to these tarpon. I don't think I've ever seen fish leap and fight all the way in like them. They are spectacular - I remember the first tarpon my brother caught - about 60 lbs. and it tore out line like it wasn't ever going to stop and the tail-walks/head shakes were amazing sights. I think we chased that first fish for at least a 1/2 hr. and at least a 1/2 mile before we got it to the boat.
I brought my own rods and reels but ended up using a lot of yours - thanks for supplying such high grade fly fishing equipment and your recommendations on flies. I also appreciate your hard work ethic and willingness to cheerfully put up with a couple of beginner tarpon fishermen. My brother and I went out fly fishing near the airport in San Juan earlier in the week and we spent the first hour watching the guide throw his cast net for some minnows. In sharp contrast, when you picked us up - the live well was already stocked and we were out and fishing in short order. I also appreciate your "catch and release" policy, silver kings certainly deserve this treatment "besides, I hope to one day return with you and catch them all over again...".
Another thing that I still find hard to believe was the fact that in two full days of fishing with you for tarpon, along many miles of inshore water, we never saw another guide. In two days of fishing, on a weekend, no less, we saw a total of two other fishing boats, the closest about a 1/2 mile away. With this tarpon fishery in Boqueron, I'm stunned that the place isn't packed with fly-fishermen elbowing one another out of the way.
My brother and I would certainly return fishing with you in a heartbeat if we got the chance. I talked to him today and he's already scheming a way to get us back next year. The 75 pounder that wrapped my line around a pier and snapped me off, still haunts me, and I won't be able to get his leaping form out of my dreams until I return.

Capt.Pochy, I had a great trip. You helped my casting in the wind tremendously and the help on how to fight tarpon.The Tarpon were plenty, big and very aggressive. I must have hooked onto at least 15 and landed four big ones in the boat on that one day trip. Even broke a few lines trying to get a few in. Your guide service is top notch. You was very professional and knowledgeable on where and how to fish these exciting fish. He was always on top of keeping me on the fish and the gear ready for me to use, actually wore me out. Not to mention the gear that you provide is top up the line and very well maintained. Exceptional day!!! We met Capt. "Pochy" Rosario at 7a.m. After a short, picturesque ride Within 20 minutes from leaving the ramp, Pochy had us in position on an active school of feeding tarpon.

Pochy, "warmed us up" on approxiamately a dozen hook ups of fish ranging from 15-50 pounds. When the bite slowed, he waisted no time on relocating and set me up on the fish of a lifetime, a 100+ pound tarpon!

It was not only a fun filled, best day fishing of my 42 years; but also an honor to fish with a true conservationist.. Pochy took DNA samples of all fish landed, and demonstrated that he was equally as interested in the well being of the fishery, as he is in your having an exciting and successful outing.

We fished on my 42nd birthday, and it was a "personal best" day as a lifetime outdoor sportsman and a birthday I'll never forget!

Fishing report yesterday We fish with Mr.David Rivera From Ponce and his wife Ms.Yaira Gonzalez in its anniversary and we had a great activity of fishing . Fishing report for today we fish with my friends from tampa bay Florida mr.Michael Murray ,Mr.David and his mother in law ms.Jane Aitkens the action was hot 2 mutton snapper (5,lbs),1 Cero mackerel(6,lbs),1 jack(5,lbs),1 barracuda and we hook up 14 tarpon(bigest 50,lbs) 8 release in good shape.

I spent a day 2 weeks ago with my new friend Capt. Pochy, the owner and guide of Light Tackle Adventures in Cabo Rojo, PR. Boy can Pochy put you on the Tarpon, skip Florida and head straight to Capt. Pochy. This was my first trip fly fishing in the salt and I made my fair share of rookie mistakes, I even hooked Pochy on the backcast once (sorry about that Pochy). Right away we started seeing Tarpon and I started scaring them away with my slow on the target and off ta rget cast. He took me into the mangroves to work out the kinks and we saw dozens of baby (10-30 pound) fish. I ended up jumping one in the mangroves and blew my chance at many more.

A word about Tarpon fishing - you have to be quick on the draw (I mean real quick); once a moving Tarpon is spotted you have about 5 seconds to get the line in the air and land the fly a few feet in front of the fish. No false casts or the guide will yell at you and the line will scare the Tarpon. Once you get the fly in the correct spot you need to let it sink and strip and jiggle the fly just right to get the Tarpon to strike. And then the strike- wow, like nothing else.

Back to the story. After the mangroves we went over to a dock structure, I laid down 15 feet of line and it was literally a Tarpon frenzy. There were Tarpon fighting over the fly! Insane! I ended up hooking one but again made a rookie mistake....I had the leader knot on the wrong side of the tip top. Bang, the rod tip pulled off and the line broke. The adrenaline was pumping now and I was ready for more. I made a few more short casts but the Tarpon were long gone.

We poled up the shore but nothing was happening, starting to get worried that I blew all the chances Pochy had given me.

We then motored over to another bay and started scanning the waters for the silver shadows. Pochy spotted a pod of 4 working the area 100 yards in front of us. I quickly spotted them and started getting ready. Man the adrenaline was flowing now and I knew I had at least one more chance. I made the best cast I made all day and landed the fly 5 feet in front of the lead fish. Bang, she struck, I waited a split second and made a monster strip set the and the fish jerked the line out of my hand. The fight was on! She immediately took off and went in to the backing. Still running she made a few jumps.

Strike!

Now the work began. She ran a while surfaced for some air, them went back to the bottom. Tug and tug, she wasn't moving. This epic battle continued on, based on the size Pochy predicted a 1:45 minute fight, we were only 30 minutes into the battle and my arms were fried. Finally, after 2 hours, she was getting tired. Pochy termed the battle "the young man and the sea", funny guy that Pochy. I pulled her close to the boat and Pochy grabbed the leader, she was tired and he puller her into the boat.

My first Tarpon trip to Puerto Rico

All, This is NOT a big fish story. Went to Puerto Rico last week - between snow storms here in London - for four days of Tarpon fishing. The first thing I will tell you, we saw hundreds of Tarpon - Puerto Rico has a large native (read that as non-migratory) population of Tarpon, some over 150 lbs. We hired Capt Francisco "Pochy" Rosario (www.lighttackleadventure.8k.com). He gave us full 10 - 11 hour days and went above and beyond the call of duty. If any of you are considering a trip to PR, I highly recommend him. This was my first time to fish for Tarpon - steep learning curve - but Pochy did everything possible to get us on fish. I would est. that I "jumped" 25 tarpon over four days, landing five (ranging in size from 35 to 50 lbs., although I did jump one Pochy estimated at 80-85 lbs.). Not that the other twenty needed help, but besides their natural ability to get off the hook, I managed to wrap the fly line around the reel once and strattled the line another time - the line going from the reel under my crotch and to the first guide; fortunately, there are no pictures of that!!

We broke the day into three types of fishing. Early, we positioned the boat off reefs, throwing to deeper water. While we were technically blind casting I.e., not throwing specifically to sighted fish (we saw Tarpon rolling in the area on bait fish and knew they were there). At other times, we saw cruising Tarpon and had the opportunity to throw to them as well. Later in the day, we moved to the shore line throwing to boat docks, under boat hulls and other structure (think Bass fishing in GA). While we saw lots more fish this way, and had more hook-ups, your chances of horsing a Tarpon out of the structure, off the pilings and into deeper water were slim. Finally, as we moved from area to area, we threw to schooling fish working bait near the surface. Pochy explained this as getting only one or two throws before the school either sounded or moved. I managed to get two Jacks (15 and 25 lbs), the second one turned my 9 wt Winston into a 14 wt.

As I said earlier, this was my first Tarpon trip. I have heard others talk of setting up off shore and waiting hours for a chance to throw at a Tarpon. In that respect, this trip was clearly different. Other that while we were traveling, one of us - and at times both of us - were on the casting deck fishing. Rob

I wish to thank you for all your advice and professional service this last week. You really know this fishing resource to the point that I would say you are a master guide. I believe you can put the fisherman on to the target species any time you want. I was able to experience the fight of a 100 pound plus tarpon for three hours. I just got back from a week in Puerto Rico with my girlfriend. She was kind enough to encourage me to go fishing with a guide one day. I booked a 6 hour trip with Captain �Pochy� Rosario of Light Tackle Adventure. I also tried to get some fishing in whenever there was a decent looking spot at the beach. We went to 1 or 2 different beaches a day without ever going to the same place twice.

I was supposed to meet Pochy at 7:30 am in Boqueron. Boqueron was a quiet, picturesque fishing village on the southwest side of PR. We got there half an hour early. The guide was already there, ready, and happy to get an early start. He had a nice flats skiff with a seat in front of the console for one person. He charged the same rate for 1 or 2 people, but there wasn�t a good place for the 2nd person to sit.

He had 2 TFO TiCrX 12 weight rods rigged with intermediate sinking line. The leaders were hand tied fluorocarbon with a 60# butt section, 40# taper, 20# tip, and a 60# shock tippet. We only used 3 different flies which were tied on 2/0 hooks. One was a chartreuse and white Half & Half with bucktail instead of feathers for the tail. We also used the same fly in black with some silver flash. The third fly was all black with a head of spun deer hair and a rabbit strip tail.

We made a quick run to a nearby marina. There was a pier where a big fishing boat was parked. They were processing fish in a small building. Tarpon were all over the place eating the remains as they were tossed in the water. We spent 45 minutes trying to get these fish to bite. I got one quick bump without being able to set the hook. Pochy was happy with my technique. He said with disgust that the fish were being stupid and we should have hooked up by now. So, we moved on.

We ran south towards the Salinas wildlife refuge. He knew there was a flats area where tarpon prowled. He said local fishermen tended to stop there to clean their nets at this time of day. We came up on a dinghy that had about 20 fish circling it. He had me cast the black rabbit strip fly right next to the dinghy and let it float there. Eventually, I hooked up with a fish that he estimated to be 50-60 pounds. We fought it for an hour. It jumped 5 times. I brought it to the boat 4 times. He grabbed the leader each time, but the fish would not give up. It dragged us out into deeper water with 4 foot waves. He said that it had a bad attitude and was acting like a fish that was twice the size. It kept going down to the bottom whenever I got it near the boat. Pochy decided that it was not going to give up. He broke it off to prevent any harm to the fish.

1/3 of my trip was over. All I had to show for it was a sore arm, stiff wrist, and bruises on my belly from the fighting butt. We hit another pier and some mangroves. I managed to land a 30 pound tarpon after a half hour fight. It spun around 3 times on the first jump. I got several other bites and jumped a few fish. We headed back to the marina where we started the day. I finished the trip by catching a baby tarpon there, which still seemed pretty big to me. We got back late.

Captain Rosario really gave me my money�s worth. He spoke English well with a thick accent. However, he worked hard to put me on the fish. He knew right where they would be, and he knew how to get them to bite. He explained that the south part of the island was virgin territory for inshore fishing. We didn't see any other sport fishermen the whole day.

Of course, my attempts to fish on my own were less successful. I caught a small snook where a river flows into the ocean in the town of Aguadilla. I caught a small perch in some still water on the edge of Combate Beach. Little did I know that there were tarpon lying under the pier on the other side of the beach. Pochy pointed them out to me later. He recommended going to La Parguera and renting a small boat to fish the mangrove islands. I didn�t have time to do that. The best looking place that I found to fish was at Jobo beach on the northwest side of the island. There was an area with good surfing as well as a calmer area protected by a reef. We snorkeled in the calmer area. I could see bigger fish in the pools between there and the surf. Unfortunately, my GF didn�t want me to go fishing there. She thought the fish were too cute�

Oh well, it was great trip. I wouldn't recommend staying in San Juan. We stayed there a few nights in order to explore Old San Juan and El Yunque, the rainsforest. It was noisy. The people were more unpleasant and rude than in other places. They drove like maniacs. There was a sense of class warfare between the very rich and very poor. The slums were right next to the affluent and tourist areas. Boqueron or La Parguera might be a better bet.

And, finally, we�ve told you in previous issues that we are always on the lookout for quality cruise-fishing opportunities (that is, day-fishing opportunities that can be had while one is on a cruise somewhere). Well, here is a dandy one from new correspondent Harry Morse who tells us he and a companion flew to Puerto Rico last month a bit early for a Caribbean cruise because they wanted to check out a tarpon and light tackle guide on the western side of the island. The guide�s name is Francisco �Pochy� Rosario of Light Tackle Adventure. Here is how things went:
�Rosario has a 17-foot skiff equipped with a selection of quality gear. He carries a complement of five good fly rods and five light spinning rods. Plus, his live well was filled with sardines he caught with a cast net hours before we arrived at 7 am. His selection of flies ranged from traditional Clousers to home-tied flies.

�Rosario boated us three miles to Cabo Rojo Pass and pulled in behind some local fishing boats cleaning their night�s catch. A school of 60- to 80-pound tarpon lounged lazily along the surface down current of the fishermen. We anchored and waited for the schooling fish to move into casting range.

�As the tarpon approached, I managed to spook them before my fly even hit the water. But Rosario was not too concerned. He set up my partner, who does not fly fish, with two baited rigs, one with a live sardine and the other with belly meat from a tuna, and cast them out for her. Then he chummed with live sardines and handed me a second fly rod with a silver Clouser Deep Water Minnow fly on it. The tarpon responded to the live bait and moved back towards us. We proceeded to hook and lose several fish and got a very good look at a 120- to 130-pound silvery fish.

�Over the next five hours, Rosario changed locations three times, fishing mangrove bays, dock structures and flats. We jumped two more medium-size tarpon, and I boated and released a small five- to seven-pounder in a steamy mangrove estuary. Rosario�s tenacity is impressive. He continually changed locations, stalked fish, changed baits and flies. He worked hard to get us each a big fish. My partner, Pam, finally got a solid hook-up on an 80-pound fish with a rod rigged with eight-pound test. Rosario followed the fish for an hour through an obstacle course punctuated by acrobatic leaps by the fish. It swam towards buoys, boats and docks, but Rosario skillfully maneuvered the boat to keep the line from tangling, all the while keeping side pressure on the big fish and gradually wearing it down and getting it to the boat.

�Rosario is Coast Guard Certified and endorsed by the official Puerto Rico Tourism Company. He fishes out of Boqueron a two-plus-hour drive on good highways from San Juan, or a short 20-minute flight to Mayaguez. He can help arrange travel and accommodations. Francisco, I want to say thanks for the great time my wife and I had fishing for tarpon with you! The fishing was fantastic with lots of fish site. It was one of my most memorable fishing trips of my life, and I have been on a bunch.

When my first fish breached the water, the most amazing sight I must say, and you said My friend that is a fish of a lifetime I new I was into a personal trophy. Two hours and forty five minutes later I landed my trophy tarpon, it was a 95 pound monster of a fish. That fish pulled us around and out to sea before she gave up. Couldn�t count the number of times this fish jumped out of the water and spooled my line. You couldnt wipe the smile off of my face, for that matter I couldnt wipe the smile off my face because I couldnt move my arms. It was a fish of a lifetime!

Lady anglers have all the luck! While I cast my fanny off for tarpon on the shallow flats of Puerto Rico Pam Sherwood hooked a world record class tarpon on 8 pound test line dangling a live sardine. I wanted to try fishing for big tarpon as part of a cruise ship vacation. Since we departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico it was the logical place to try and book a light tackle/flyfishing trip for tarpon. Most of the light tackle and flyfishing guides advertising work out of the harbor area. I wanted to see more of the Puerto Rico coastline than San Juan Harbor where our cruise ship docked. To find a guide outside of the harbor areas I rented a car and made a two hour drive to the west side of the island and started asking around marinas for light tackle and flyfishing guides. Most of the local charter captains referred us back to San Juan while local anglers jokingly referred us to psychiatrists. We tracked down light tackle specialist Francisco (Pochy) Rosario in the small town of Boqueron. He pioneered light tackle guiding on the west side of the island. Eight years ago he started chasing tarpon on the local flats after moving over from running deep sea charters. He has an impressive list of avid fly and light tackle anglers from Oregon to England for a guide so hard to find. Pam Sherwood enjoys light tackle spin fishing but does not saltwater flyfish. Pochy said that he could accommodate both our wishes with me casting flies off the front of the boat and Pam fishing bait out of the back. He felt that both of us would hook tarpon with most of the action coming of live sardines and Clouser flies patterned after them. Climbing on board his 17 foot skiff I was impressed with the quality of his gear. He carried a complement of five quality fly rods and five light spinning rods. His live well was filled with silvery sardines he caught with a cast net hours before we arrived at 7 a.m. and he had an assortment of other baits. His selection of flies ranged from traditional Clousers Minnow imitations to a home tied floater. We boated three miles of crystal clear flats to Cabo Rojo Pass and pulled in behind several local fishing boats cleaning their night catch. A school of 60- 80 pound tarpon lazed along the surface down current of the fishermen cleaning their catch. We anchored and waited for the schooling fish to move into casting range. As the tarpon worked their way past us I stepped up on the casting platform and started to cast. The fish spooked and bolted before my fly hit the water. So much for laying the fly out in front of the fish. Pochy baited up two rigs, one with a live sardine and the other with belly meat from a small tuna and cast them out for Pam. He chummed with live sardines and handed me a second fly rod with a silver Clouser Deep Water Minnow fly on it. The tarpon responded to the live bait and moved back towards us. Almost immediately a tarpon lunged at my fly but missed sucking it in. Pam had a hit on one of the bait rods but the tarpon shook the hook with the first jump. Then one crushed a bait and streaked off with spinning reel spoon singing. Suddenly the line slacked. The hook was flattened. The tarpon lingered just out of fly casting range on the clear flats. We watched them fining and cruising around. I picked up one of the Penn International Spinning rod and heaved out a live sardine on a circle hook. Immediately a tarpon struck my bait and streaked away jumping at 100 yards. Pochy cautioned me not to put too much pressure on the fish since the line was only 8 pound test. A half hour later and three jumps the hook pulled loose. We got a very good look at a 120-130 pound silvery fish. My adrenaline was pumping. Over the next five hours we changed locations three times fishing mangrove bays, dock structures and flats. We jumped two more medium size tarpon and I brought a small 5-7 pound baby tarpon to the boat for release in a steamy mangrove estuary. Pochy tenacity impressed me. He continually changed locations, stalked fish, changed bait and flies. He was working trying to get us each a big fish. Pam had kicked back and relaxing when a tarpon hit her 8 pound test offering. It ripped the line off the spinning reel headed seaward. The drag was just tight enough to imbed the circle hook but not tight enough to break the line. Pochy continually checked the drag. Our jaws dropped when the fish cleared the water on its first jump. It was not one of the 15-30 pound tarpon we were casting to on top of the water. It was in the 80 pound class. The fish reduced a full spool of line to a quarter spool and Pochy started the motor and we followed the fish. Pam first solid hook up on a tarpon came on the lightest line on board only 8 pound test. Over the next hour the fish led us through an obstacle course punctuated by acrobatic leaps. It swam towards buoys, boats and docks. Pochy skillfully maneuvered the boat to keep the line from tangling while keeping side pressure on the big fish gradually wearing it down. When Pochy reached down and grabbed the tarpon mouth we realized how big the fish was. Did we want to keep it? As a catch and release guide he did not want to kill the fish and neither did we. After Pochy released the fish we decided to call it a day. Pam was drained and we headed in for a cold beer. What a way to top off a cruise vacation. About two weeks ago, I was in western Puerto Rico. I had set up a charter with Captain Francisco Rosario. My wife joined me. We had a great time. I caught my first tarpon on fly. It was not a big tarpon, but it was a tarpon...by the way, caught it on a clouser. You know that I have chartered a lot of guides over the past 7-8 years. Captain Rosario is one of the top three guides I have ever hired. First, he is the only guide I have ever engaged who caught bait before going out on the charter. How uniqe..instead of wasting an hour catching bait, he was ready to go at the dock. While he is very accomplished with fly fishing, he does a lot of light tackle with bait. Since my wife was with me and I do the light tackle thing as well, I was glad we were using everything available. Second, he always had at least two poles out with bait. He was aggressively creating opportunities to catch fish. Thats what I wanted, on vacation. My wife came along for her first charter. She caught two fish, including a small tarpon. We fished open water off a point for tarpon, followed up with fisherman he knew who were changing bait, fished the mangroves of a national park for snook and tarpon, and finished with some docks where the tarpon and snook hung out. Tarpon Adventure

It was a Friday morning when my friend Jose Vega invited me to go fishing with his son Gabo and two of my kids, Eduardo and Diego. Next day we were in the water at 7:00 am with Captain Pochy and his 17 feet fishing boat. The kids were very exited when Pochy, from Light Tackle Adventure, caught around 100 sardines for bait with his net. Then we moved between Mayaguez and Añasco bay and immediately the three kids caught Tarpons, Snooks and Robalos. Mi oldest, Eduardo, caught a Robalo of approximately 10 pounds. Diego caught an 8 pounds Snook and Gabo caught a Tarpon and a Snook of about 8 pounds each. They kept bringing in Robalos and Tarpons. We got distracted and saw the three of them fighting a fish for a while until we decided to help and they had a 12 pounds Sierra. While Pochy and Jose were busy helping the kids one of the rods was hit by something big. Pochy told me to grab it and when the fish jumped out the water he said, ok guys this tarpon is above 100 pounds, lets open some space for Duky. After a fight of approximately 50 minutes I brought in the 150 pounds and 51/2 feet long Tarpon on board. We took pictures and sent it back to the water. That was the biggest fish I ever caught. It was great to fight such a big fish with a spinning rod and a 20 pounds line. Around 10:30 am we were heading back and the kids could not believe the experience.

Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico: Tarpon from the Beach

I had a great trip to Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico with my brother last week. We fished with Capt Francisco “Pochy” Rosario. We learned a ton of information by fishing with this guy. The transition from trout to tarpon is not easy, & there are several freshwater habits that become Tarpon losing mistakes. Mistake #1): the trout high stick #2) forgetting the strip set #3) palming the reel on Tarpon. Although we were warned, I think my brother and I managed make all 3 mistakes, but we still caught some fish. If you want to catch a Tarpon, Puerto Rico is the place to go. They are all over the place and are not transitory.
The Fishing in Cabo Rojo was very good and in a beautiful area. We fished for baby tarpon along mangrove lined lagoons, & cast to fish cruising in the shadows of boats and docks, and poled and drifted over a couple beautiful flats.
The highlight of the trip was sight casting to a couple of tarpon from the beach about 10 feet from the boat. These guys had their face in the sand and tails sticking out of the water like a couple of tailing redfish. We hooked 4 Tarpon in about an hour and grabbed the leader on 2. I lost one about 50 feet from the beach after palming the reel causing the shock tippet to abrade. Yeah, I won’t make that mistake again. We had an awesome trip. Puerto Rico is a beautiful island, the people are great and the Tarpon are always there.

I've returned successful from PR. My trip wasn't as successful as the report that i read that someone else has posted but Capt. Rosario is Class. I fished one day with Capt. Pochy Rosario and I landed my first Tarpon . We saw tons of tarpon and one monster barracuda! I had four eats and landed two, one of around 80lbs and a baby tarpon. One of the fish I have to admit I trout set on after he ate it stupid, stupid, stupid. After all I have been a trout guide for 15 years.
I have to agree with one of the replies to my first thread to not fish San Juan. I know some people have had success there but after fishing in Cabo Rojo in crystal clear water as apposed to the murky lagoons of San Juan i'll take Boqueron any day. I didn't get a chance to get to culebra or vieques though i was able to catch some barracuda in some spots on the north shore in vega baja.
Well for now I'll be here in Utah the BWO's are popping like crazy here so the fishing is going off. My next salt adventure will be on Cape Cod for two weeks in June. I can hardly sleep, stripers and now Tarpon have taken over my brain.
On a seperate side note I have had a lot of experience fishing and guiding in Patagonia if any one ever needs info, I was there traveling for three weeks this past winter.

I had the good fortune to call the flats and bays my office for work . Cabo Rojo is a magnificent area to cast a streamer in front of hungry tarpon. I was presented with the options of casting to schools of feeding fish over vast shallow flats, working amongst entangled mangroves to pocket pools & tiny creeks with single fish, and working the magic of the river. There’s enough variety in this game to keep anyone engaged.A massive mangrove shoreline dominates the coastal habitat. Crystalline waters are the norm for the lower reaches as they empty into sweeping flats. On the other hand, rust-stained hues characterize the smaller quarters of the upper river and tiny creek habitats. The estuary habitat is superb; shallow sandy-bottomed grass beds, banks dominated by mangrove roots and green canopy. The entire region sports an average depth of two to Twenty feet overall. The dynamics provide you with a perfect window to sight-fish.The estuary’s open water affords fly fishers with 360 degrees of casting opportunity. Keep your eyes peeled – scan for dorsals & tails, breezing baitfish, or erupting water and instant mayhem. The flats are a casters dream situation. The longer you can cast a line, the better your chances of reaping the harvest. Everyone standing on the bow of the flat boat have the opportunity to cast your fly in front of the silver king. It’s an awesome place to explore. It’s darn productive for feeding fish. This place isn’t for the faint of heart however as you’ll be challenged in all aspects of your angling skills. You earn every fish that comes to hand. I love this game. Once the fly hit its mark a tarpon wouldn’t waste any time with their reaction.
Puerto Rico is the “secret” hotspot just a few hours from any major airport in the US mainland.This is a fishery that makes for lifetime memories.
